Felt like this was Dude Where's My Car meets Mr. Robot. Felt the writing lacked polish and not really any redeeming characteristics for any of the main protagonists.

In a word......heavy-handed.

This was bad. So bad. The book is about a man who is disillusioned from working in tech and sets out to help fix social media. There were several things I didn’t particularly like about this book. First, why are white people called whitemen and why are labels like Browns? It is so offensive. Second, why are the characters so cookie cutter? The dumb jock pool man, the hot super nerd chick, the Zuckerberg like main character? The characters are so flat. I didn’t like any of them or care at all. The Pilot character in particular was so bad. He was so off-putting with the way that he talks and monitors everything like a psychopath. The conversations made no sense. I’m going to try and pretend this book doesn’t exist now.

2 1/2 stars. Didn’t get why the names of the internet moguls were all so very weird. And that they were all so evil. It was easy to see what real life companies the ones in this story were proxies for. I got really irritated for the first third of the book as the main protagonist was heralded for all of the great ideas while the woman was the one who really did the hard work. I also thought that the story really went off the deep end into a dark abyss that wasn’t necessary.

Although this was fiction, it also made me really think about our reliance on the internet and our relationship  with it.

I really enjoyed listening to this. The ending wasn’t everything I hoped for but I’m really not sure where else it could have went.

I originally gave 4 stars because there were things I didn’t like about the book. But days later I’m still thinking about the content. It’s a great book for making us look at ourselves in our use of social media. It’s a quick read and a page turner, so I’d like to use it in a social media course.

After reading Yoon's more recent YA novels, this was definitely a plot out of left field. I really enjoyed the first half with the commentary on our current internet-filled lives, but then the book took a left turn. I really did have to force myself to get through the last quarter, and I can't say there was a phenomenal ending... I might have to be a little less trusting of the books I liked by an author and more perceptive of the synopses for all I pick up.
