Unfortunately this intriguing concept felt gimmicky in execution. A bit all over the place in terms of the world building.

I wanted to like this so bad, because the Broken Earth Trilogy is one of my favourite series of all time, but unfortunately this didn't really resonate with me at all. The writing style and tone are completely different, and I just didn't find the characters or plot that compelling. I bought this book back when it first came out, and I've only just finally gotten around to finishing it. A real shame tbh.

The audio version of this was very highly produced. It made the "self talk" aspects much easier to understand and the narrator was fantastic. The concept of cities coming to life was really fascinating and the interaction of different cities between themselves was also interesting. For all that there is action and dynamic, it's rather character driven. I am not very familiar with New York or it's burros and if I was then I would have enjoyed the New York specific personality aspects more. It ends with enough uncertainty that I'd like to continue to the next in the series, though the ending is satisfying.
