This one was so confusing and while I loved the ending, this could have been shortened quite a bit.

Probably a 4.5.

This was good! Great! This book has so much going for it and I think it's a crime how underrated it is. I think theatres make the perfect setting for a good mystery, since the place is full of actors and falsities. The romance between Zara and Eli was so good too. It was the pulse at the heart of this book and just kept me so invested throughout. This is my first Capetta book and now I want to read everything they've written.

In the words of the texts I sent my best friend:

'MATE.'

'I HAVE THE MOST INCREDIBLE BOOK FOR YOU TO READ'

'QUEER, THEATER, DEATH, MYSTERY, BEAUTIFUL'

In the words of the text my best friend sent back to me:

'IT SOUNDS PERFECT!'.

My new absolute-favourite-book-ever-ever-ever*. Please read it.

(*ranking does not include I Capture the Castle, on account of this being eternally unparalleled in my heart)

Oh, the writing is so beautiful, Amy Rose Capetta has such poetic prose.

The plot, however…
I was immediately drawn to the characters by the great writing and the deep thoughts. But as they insistently remained in this hell plot, my empathy flagged. I read them as the very over dramatic theater members they were, and it was frustrating and then boring. Their actions didn’t make sense, and I usually love a twisty murder mystery.

This wasn’t that. More a tale of obsessed theater people in abusive relationships. The main romance between Zara and Eli was so sweet in comparison, but also a bit cardboard with unnecessary roadblocks created.

If you’re big into theater, this might be a better fit. Great writing, and I’m impressed that Capetta created a believable Greek tragedy for this story.

This book was really interesting in terms of plot. However, there were POV shifts and so many characters being introduced that it got difficult to track them for a while.
Because of how many characters there were, some of the key characters and components to the mystery got lost in the chaos. The reveal of the mystery wasn't as exciting as it could have been. Past that, the resolution of the back felt like it was missing something. We know the answer to the mystery component, but are given no idea as to what comes next for the characters--does the play stay open and continue? It doesn't seem likely, but then that raises more questions for the romance that developed in the story.

The ending of the book just felt underwhelming.

3.5. The writing in this novel was very good, but the plot was a little slow and unbalanced. By this I mean I couldn't tell if the main purpose of the book was to tell the love story between Zara and Eli or if it was to uncover the mysteries behind the murders. That might have been intentional, but it meant it wasn't a fast read for me at all.

So this book took me 2 attempts, once in physical copy which i DNF'd at 80 pages and the audio book which I almost DNF'd half way through but preservered. In the end I think I can.......appreciate.....this book for the story it was telling and the writing but it was about 100-150 pages longer than it needed to be and the reveal wasn't that surprising. Over all not a very memorable read except for the gorgeous cover.
