It's Harry Potter but not Harry Potter and I loved it. Penny is delightful, Watford is interesting in its own right, and I'm obsessed with how magic works in this world.
I'm not a huge enemies-to-lovers fan, but Rowell kept me turning the pages and rooting for Simon and Baz the whole way through.

My rosebud boy.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, this story. Though it took me about 100 pages to move past how uncomfortably H*rry P*tter it was, but I enjoyed every single thing once I'd settled that emotion/connection.

This story follows Simon, "The Chosen One", in an adventure to save his magickal world. Forming friendships with people he never thought he could, and learning about himself on the journey. The representation of diversity, mental health & politics was spot on — not over dramatic, not generalised or depressing, just right. Comforting, really.

Simon: A character I really enjoyed reading, though it took me a couple 100 pages to feel he was interesting. His mind is all over the place and yet no where at the same time. His arch was really beautiful, I love a good self-sacrifice that isn't death because somehow it feels more insidious that the reflection of death on those left than the character themselves.

Baz: He is toxic, violent and so horny. He was my favourite to read, and who I want to see a therapist the most. He loved so hard. He just wanted to protect his heart. He didn't want to disappoint his mother, poor boy.

Penny: Was insufferable, but in the way she was supposed to be. Wonderful written to push the story forward, to pull people together. Agatha: In my eyes, was pointless in this story. I just disliked her.

This book was a surprise! I wasn't sure what to expect, but it'sbeen on my radar for years and I decided to finally give it a chance. I loved the characters, the plot was intriguing, the twists were fun and made me audibly gasp in some places. Who doesn't love a good Chosen One story, and this is no different. Now I need to pick up the second book immediately!
