I don't think I have ever been so torn on a book. This was one of the most beautifully creative reads I have ever encountered and yet, one of the most frustrating. I spent half of the time marveling at what I was reading and the other half, book throwing frustrated at not understanding what was going on. This is one of those books that has the extreme 'show and not tell' philosophies in the writing much like Brandon Sanderson. Concepts get introduced without being explained, and that tends to lose me fairly quickly. I went on the Internet many times because I felt like I was reading a second book of a series without reading the first, and I had to triple check that I wasn't indeed starting a series at the wrong point. That being said, I was fully compelled to finish the book because so many fantastically interesting and macabre things take place and some of the characters are endearing. I wanted to know more about Billy than the author was willing to show. The world of the monsters is a brilliantly fascinating one. The character, Billy, knows what's going on, unfortunately that does not always get shared with the reader. If you enjoyed the writing style of Sanderson, I can't recommend this book enough. Billy's Monsters, beautiful as you are,I'm afraid we have to break up. But it's me, not you.
