This book was kind of cute, but it was also pretty flat. There was no conflict moving the story forward. It felt more like a slice of life than a story with a complete story and character arc. I also did not love the narrators. When the female narrator did Myers voice, it took me out of the story every time. I really wanted to like this, as it came highly recommended, but I just found it to be very OK.

She’s a comedian, he’s her manager, but they’re also close friends, Farley and Meyer had a great friendship. When the opportunity of a lifetime comes to take Farley’s stand up to even higher standards, Farley and Meyer find themselves in a… fake dating arrangement in order to boost the publicity of the upcoming comedy tour and bring buzz surrounding it. Farley has always had feelings for Meyer, but has kept it in for the sake of not losing their friendship and close connection. Meyer always had Farley’s best interests at heart, but even the grumpy, single dad couldn’t help falling for the sunshine, outspoken young woman who was ten years younger than him. With a friends to lovers, age gap, fake dating romance, Tarah DeWitt wrote an enjoyable, laughable, and fun story that had me hooked right away.

I’ve been wanting to read this book ever since I read my first Tarah DeWitt book, and safe to say, I was easily immersed in Farley and Meyer’s story. The thing I love about Tarah DeWitt’s writing is how she writes in such an easy, straightforward and entertaining way that makes her stories fun, but also insightful with what the characters are going through. Farley and Meyer were interesting characters especially with them working in the stand up comedy industry, it was one I hadn’t read about before. I liked how Farley was an outspoken woman who, in her stand up comedy pushed the envelope and boundaries of what people wouldn’t have expected from her and her jokes. I personally haven’t been to a comedy show, but reading this book gave me the impression of how fun it must be in person. Farley wasn’t exactly the kind of female character I was expecting, and I was glad for that. I’m always interested to see different personalities in characters and Farley definitely fit into the unique category and she was lovable. Meyer was also an interesting character and the more I learned about him, the more I realized that beneath his grumpy exterior, he was just a man who dealt with everyday things like anyone else would.

I love a friends to lovers storyline, and with Farley and Meyer having such a close friendship, they nailed the friendship aspect! I could see throughout the story that Farley and Meyer understood each other well and whenever they were together, it was natural. Obviously, when it came to Farley and Meyer trying to figure out the whole fake dating thing there was some confusion, but they later found an organic connection between them. The more that Farley and Meyer leaned into the whole fake dating, it suddenly became more apparent how much their true feelings came to the surface. For me, it was no surprise to learn that Farley and Meyer had feelings for each other for a long time, but for them to find out themselves, it was like sparks went off. Seeing Farley and Meyer’s feelings come to fruition was sweet and I was just glad once they let each other know how much they had always felt about one another.

Overall, Farley and Meyer had a great friendship which translated well into their romance. The thing I love most about Tarah DeWitt’s books, is how easy and entertaining they are to read. I found myself quickly reading through this story and enjoying it. Farley was a unique character who didn’t stick to the norms that most people would expect especially as a woman working in the comedy industry that was mainly male dominated. Meyer was not only a great manager to Farley, but also a great friend and confidante who was always there to help her through anything. I thought Hazel was such a sweet kid, and loved the relationship she had with Farley. All in all, this was a lighthearted and entertaining story that had great tropes from fake dating, age gap romance, single dad, and friends to lovers. If you’re looking for a book that’s easy to read, and just dive into a lighthearted romance, then I’d recommend this book.
