Holy shit. In typical style, I criticized this book for some clunky imagery (which totally works in Vuong’s poems, but was a bit of a stretch in this piece) and a stretch in the middle that felt uninspired and lost. What I didn’t realize was that it was all part of the big picture and this book slated me.
It’s a piece of work that you could read a dozen times and understand differently, with so many poignant statements and observations that it felt like holding up one shiny gem after the next to the light and trying to decide which was my favorite. Vuong explores love, loss, becoming yourself and meeting people where they’re at to protect them. I wish I’d read this before I lost the people who made me who I am. I hope I remember this as I move into the next stage of my life.
My favorite part was a memory Vuong had with his mother of going to the shopping mall. I felt like I was right there with them.

First few chapters made me cry. Vuong just has a way of words and each passage is captivating in its own way. I honestly thought this book was a personal story about himself and his relationship with his mother. So when I found out that it wasn’t. It made me appreciate how he was able to express parts of himself onto Little Dog. It really captures the flaws of what it means to be human and the tribulations of being queer in an environment that doesn’t tolerate it. Great Book.
