My first experience with Vampire Knight, and this is not what I thought it was going to be.
This is so sexual. I wasn't expecting this. The very concept of vampires is treated with such blatant eroticism and though nothing explicit ever happens, the entire volume is drowning in suggestive material. Why?? I went into this thinking it would be fairly tame but every other scene in the second half is treating a vampire bite like an orgasm. It never goes anywhere because this is meant for an underage audience, but still. Why is this so weird?
And why are all the men drawn like they've had their arms horribly dislocated?

The anatomy is so off when it comes to the torso and arm proportions. Everything is thin and long, and it ceases to look human at times. Yes, vampires are monsters, but they're supposed to look human, albeit abnormally beautiful. Arm horror aside, the art style is pleasant to look at and has that very stereotypical romance manga aesthetic. Large eyes, sparkly backgrounds, and excessive blushing galore. Even the bloody scenes are framed in a romantic light.

As a first volume, it's existing to set up basic dynamics and has little in the way of story. Characters are introduced, roles are established—that's about it. Pages are wasted repeating basic information that has been established already. As if the reader will forget. Seriously, how many times does Yuki need to say that her job is to keep vampires a secret? It's annoying after a while.

The characters haven't had enough time to show complicated personalities, but their fundamentals are obvious.
Yuki is our kindhearted lead with bad self-esteem and a distaste for conflict.
Zero, her adoptive brother, is the cold and angsty boy who doesn't like to show he cares.
Kaname is the elegant and regal boy with a crush on Yuki, who is viewed as beneath him.
It's all pretty standard except with vampires. Which in itself is fairly standard too now.

Honestly, I found the book really enjoyable by virtue of how ridiculous it is. The shoddy anatomy, the weak story, the excessive vampire eroticism, the overdramatic character moments—it's cringe, dare I say.
I love cringe romances aimed at preteens. They're horrible and that's what makes them good.
