because there was so much research done on this, at first i had a little bit of trouble acclimating to the book for the first 50 or so pages, after that though, the world of this book was so easy to fall in to. i usually find descriptions of war and planning tiresome, but the scheming and logic was so engaging in this that i really was quite interested following the threads hild was thinking through. i liked this much more than i thought i might.

this book took me a while to get into and i think i needed a more comprehensive glossary to remember all the characters with similar sounding names but i found it a really rich and rewarding experience. i loved the politicking and how aware hild is of the precariousness of her own position. certain aspects of the ending (iykyk) made me uncomfortable but i think the discomfort is partially intentional and partially a result of different social norms.....either way eager to read the sequel!

dense, intricate, incredibly well-researched. can't wait for the sequel.

Really enjoyed this read, even though it took several months to finish the book. It was easy enough to read intensely for a few days and then pick it up again much later.
The story of Hild - a young woman born into a time of change in old Britain is told well, never quite relieving the tension as she navigates life in a world where power and allegiance can shift rapidly.

This book makes me aware of how completely lacking so much Fake Euro fantasy is. THIS is how you write another world—and it’s our own. Marvelous.

Second read through ‘24: and yet also I see the ways in which it indulges itself at the expense of real tension or theme.

Nothing much happens. If you can be satisfied with a glimpse at life in northern England in 600(or so)AD then you'll like this. If you're looking for action and intrigue... then look elsewhere.
