I really feel like this relied so heavily on the language it used - that that's a defining aspect of why this has endured - and therefore reading a translation of it... you kind of don't get the full impact. I definitely just straight up did not care about a third of the way into this book. It's hard to care about characters who are either oblivious or actively making their own lives worse. Emma was consistently like: This is a bad idea, I'm gonna do it anyway. Then was like: Oh no, consequences!! Friend, I do not feel bad about those because you knew that was a bad plan when you conceived of it, you told me, remember?
