The book started out quite nicely, love story, wedding, vow exchange. A tradional novel where the woman is the most important character. But that was the problem with this book: I hate Emma. Always complaining, I understand depression, but God I couldn't wait for this book to be over!

I relate too much to characters with escapist tendencies like Emma to fully enjoy this type of storyline. It's unnerving when the root of someone's self-destruction is a trait you recognize in yourself. I cried twice reading this, both while Flaubert describes Emma's early encounters with art - sweeping you along with Emma's fantasy at the opera and as she revels in the ornate religious drawings at the convent. This vivid portrayal of interiority and our relation to art (that struck a deep chord with my daydreaming inner child) is so intense and pure and beautiful to me ... and it's also the stage for Emma's cruelty and neglect. The seed of all her disaffection being that no one can match or bear witness to the beauty she experiences alone, leading to her contempt, especially for those closest to her.

For depictions of romantic melodrama and hedonism from this era I'm realizing I prefer the gothic genre (Wuthering Heights, Picture of Dorian Gray) - similar in their satire and frenetic escalation, but with a bit less seeming disdain for the central characters despite their equally pernicious and/or fatal flaws. Still would strongly recommend this for the reverently intricate portraits of provincial life (I savored every detail of that wedding!! wow) and truly stunning imagery. One of my favorite passages in the book, at the peak of Emma's desperation: "It suddenly seemed to her that fiery particles were bursting in the air, like bullets exploding as they fell, and spinning and spinning and finally melting in the snow among the tree branches. In the center of each of them appeared Rodolphe's face. They multiplied; they came together; they penetrated her; everything vanished."
