i liked this book a lot more than what i anticipated. i really loved the writing style, although there were some moments where i thought the descriptions were too long and didn’t ad anything to the story. i’m really glad i got to read this and can’t wait to study it more deeply :)

¿La pasé muy mal leyéndolo? Sí. ¿Es una obra esencial del canon literario? También. ¿Merece ese puesto? Absolutamente.

Probablemente la perfección del realismo francés. Quizás mi problema es con el realismo como tal, leo por buscar la desmesura, no el control conservador que aquí abunda. Pero aún así, no le puedo negar el crédito a esta novela tan buena.

The self-inflicted existence of distress governs Madame Bovary's life throughout the story. Her character is paradoxical; she is aware of herself and yet still clings to any fragment of happiness that drifts into her reach. Because of this awareness, she cannot be excused for all of her actions. And yet, while reading, you can't help but empathize with her. Her story is similar to anyone's, to some degree. Who hasn't reached for material possessions to bring happiness? Who hasn't yearned for a different path, a different fate?

While this book was frustrating to read at points, the psychological aspects are interesting to dissect. She, as a character, is believable. The writing, however, leaves me wanting more. It seems that Flaubert was trying to write a novel that would contain the same tragic-slice-of-life characters that dominates Dostoevsky or Dickens novels. In the end, the novel misses the mark.

However, this is much more to be said about the character of Emma Bovary. Similar to Flaubert, I must say "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." (Madame Bovary is me.)

i understand that this book was supposed to be a critique of the bourgeois and the culture that they have around affairs and social life but honestly i didn’t think it was a strong critique. i felt like flaubert could have done more to show the damages and consequences of this lifestyle. it was honestly quite boring and hard to engage with.
