What if the Civil War never happened? This is a story of a free Black man in the north who is a bounty hunter for escaped enslaved people. I was not a fan of this novel. This was one of many audiobooks I bought years ago that I’m finally getting around to reading and I honestly don’t know why I even chose to purchase this book. This was essentially a terrible a Civil War rendition of The Man in the High Castle. 

The problems I have with this book are numerous, but the biggest one being that it was a Black man’s perspective written by a white dude. And I just have a hard time believing that this would be a realistic perspective in this situation. The author also seemed to believe the lack of a Civil War wouldn’t have changed much of the history of leadership in our country as he referenced the same presidents we’ve had and much of the US appears to be “business as usual,” which is completely unbelievable. The makeup of our entire country would be radically different had the CW not happened. 

One thing I DID like about it is the overarching theme and the “point of the story,” so to speak. As you’re reading about this depiction of modern day slavery in America, it is not unlike the ACTUAL slavery happening in the production of much of the world’s goods. You read about this depiction and are appalled by it. Only to realize, we should be equally appalled at the enslavement of the people in the garment factories, tech factories, and so many other goods produced for our consumption. This is what brings it from a 1 to a 2 star. I really think this story could have been done much better to make this point a lot more effectively. 

The book may have been “meh,” but the narrator was phenomenal! Narrator ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
