In a Glass Grimmly

This is such a charming read. I love the writing style just everything about it. This one is a bit less strong than the first one but I still enjoyed it a lot nonetheless. I read this one and the first one when I was in middle school but I never got around the third one. I'm so very excited to read it I hope it doesn't disappoint.

A really fun adventure, I am reading this with my son and we are both enjoying the Grimmness of the tales.

I found the fairy tales in this one felt a bit more disjointed in the way that they were brought together than in A Tale Dark and Grimm, but that said, Gidwitz still delivers a deliciously dark tale that will make a perfect read aloud for those who enjoy a good beheading. The style of writing begs to be shared - in fact, I think it's rather wasted on a librarian reading to herself.

Jack and Jill's story didn't get its hooks in me quite as diligently as Hansel and Gretle's, but it was still an exciting adventure. There was more violence and blood in this one, but the same wit and cleverness from the first book carried into this story. I really enjoyed the continuance of the Ravens and the addition of Frog, though the first story made me a bit upset as animal cruelty is high on my list of unforgivable actions. But overall this was a wonderful romp through more fairytale "truths."

“And then at night, they would lie under the stars, and the night was not as cold as it had once been, and Jack would think, I had fun today. And Jill would think, I was happy with what I did.

It was a strange sensation.”

This series is brilliant. I love the adventures and the mashups of various fairy tales. I can't wait to read the final installment.

Another winner from Adam Gidwitz! My kids loved the first and simply adored the second. Interestingly enough, I liked this book better than the first, but both of the kids thought the first was better. While A Tale Dark and Grimm was very gorey and integrated some of the lesser known fairy tales, I thought this book flowed from story to story so much better and had some of the more popular tales. Don't get me wrong, this book still had its share of blood and death because it wouldn't be a Grimm tale without it. Not your average book of fairy tales, but definitely appeals to those kids with a darker side.

This is the story of Jack and Jill like you have never heard before. I loved how the author added in other fairy tales and legends into this tale. Beware this story is not for the faint of heart. If you don't like hearing about nasty giants and tricky goblins then this book is not for you. You will laugh, cry and fear for Jack and Jill as they go about their adventure.

Another wonderfully and darkly funny story that's full of important lessons and ideas. I really love this series.

In the second volume of interweavings of twists on the Brothers Grimm (with a little Andersen thrown in as well), Gidwitz chooses Jack and Jill as the main characters. Yes, at one point they do tumble down a hill. And climb a beanstalk, tackling giants, before descending to the depths of the goblin world. The frog from The Frog Prince is also a starring character, with a rather important role by the end. But while Jack and Jill's outward journey is on adventure after another, it is their inner journey where the real transformation, for both of them, takes place. Humorous, appealing, and yes grimm, the characters' internal growth is the most satisfying part of the story for me.
