Great detailed book. I was surprised by the Outlander tie in.
The audiobook narration was AMAZING!

3.5 stars. Great story but fell short of my lofty expectations. I had been wanting to read this one for years and probably built it up too high in my head.

Summary: On her arrival to join her wealthy father in a small frontier town in America, English spinster Elizabeth finds the situation not as promised and an intense attraction to one of the backwoodsmen and his family - as their families’ pasts and local tension cause problems.
Stats: HR leaning historical fiction- post revolutionary America, M/F, first of a series, some FTB/ some open door.
Notes: I really enjoyed this, but it’s not light. There’s so much plot and things keep going wrong, and it’s a long book. I thought the romance and the main characters were lovely, the setting was well formed and detailed, but I’m not sure if I’ll continue the series. It’s just a commitment and took a lot out of me. It would be a good choice for people who like the idea of Outlander, but want a less complicated key relationship and less SA/rape - the direct references to Outlander were fun and. mostly neatly woven in.
OTT and Spoilery Content Warnings (CW) and Trigger Warnings (TW):
Hunting, firearms, shooting, blood, mention of slavery, mention of religion, dead previous partner, single parent MC, death, death in childbirth (off page, in the past), dead parent, family tension, turkey hunting game (somewhat torturous), racism (by/of side characters), gambling/gambling addiction, debt, death of animals (hunting), child death (off page, in the past), mention of kidnapping (not an MC), alcohol, death in war, somewhat unhappy first marriage, vague references to violence against children/domestic violence, jealousy, arm grabbing, soldier MMC, descriptions of war including scalping, a few brief appearances from outlander characters (Jamie, Claire, Ian Murray), attempted kidnapping, fistfight, infertility?, infidelity in previous relationship, attempted forced marriage/engagement, descriptions of pregnancy/labour/childbirth (side characters) with complications, illness, medical care, fishing, animal harvesting and butchering blood and gore, shooting, firearms, fistfight, Inclement weather, threat of rape/SA, SA of the FMC (touching of breasts), bludgeoning, knife violence, pregnancy, custody dispute, FMC pushes the MMC during an argument, dying family member, death of family members, organized fighting, fire, fatal burns, death of sibling, premature birth, MMC pushes a villain off a cliff to his death, conversation about asexuality/homosexuality within historical context (quite open)

There were some wishful romantic aspects of this book that made me roll my eyes a few times but I did enjoy the story. It was somewhat stressful but I really appreciated the aspect of Native American culture presented. I don't plan on continuing with the rest of the series (this was a random thrift store find). I maily read this because I had a "nature craving" and it somewhat helped.
Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood. If you like Gabadon (and I do,) this is pretty close. I decided not to finish because all the Native Americans were stellar characters who spoke and understood English perfectly. Convenient for the author and reader, but strained my sense of credulity. Ditto for the possibility of a frontier school of this time period that would consider accepting Native American students let alone a Mohawk teacher. It plays nice, unfortunately society wasn't so welcoming.
Swoon. So romantic, but great 18th century historical details as well. A sequel of sorts to The Last of the Mohicans. This had a great couple who argue and fight and face lots and lots of danger both together and apart but have respect for each other - as well as scorching chemistry! Villainous villains, noble savages, true love triumphs -- some might say its melodramatic and mean it as a slam, but I stick my tongue out in their general direction.
