A good filler series while waiting for the next Outlander book by Diana Gabaldon. Not a difficult read, but interesting characters in a great setting.
3.5 stars for this interesting but very long account of a British woman's relationship with a white man raised as an Indian in late 18th century upstate New York.
I just can't. I stopped at about 50%. I thought this might be a nice guilty-pleasure type romance novel to read before sleep. It was ok at first, but every chapter went downhill. When I got to the part where Nathan got angry with Elizabeth for having the gall to be tied to a tree by a potential rapist and told her to never do that again I just quit. It was getting pretty boring already, but that scene really killed my resolve to keep going. Also all the characters twitched in their cheeks a lot. "A muscle in his cheek twitched." "Her cheek twitched". They were all just very twitchy.
This book was a long read but I loved every minute of it. The author describes thing in such detail that you can actually feel yourself in the landscape however, she does not go overboard and provide a plethora of details that you get lost it. This story had so many twists and turns that it kept me captivated for the entirety of the book.

My favorite type of book! Well-developed, strong characters, a good storyline, and rich prose that puts you right in the story. Somewhat similar in style to Outlander but unique enough on its own. Just excellent.

It started off fairly strong for me. An English women (spinster at the old age of 29) comes to a settlement in New York state to become a school teacher. She falls in love with a man raised by Native Americans (think Sully from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman). There is a conflict over land...that lasts 691 pages. My investment in the story started waning midway through. Sheer stubbornness made me finish. But then the story leads into the next book, of which there are 5 more. I won’t be continuing because there isn’t enough substance in the plot for me to read another page. I was also irked to discover that some of the Outlander characters are mentioned in this book. It made the whole story seem like fan fiction. I like Outlander, but I don’t want the characters popping up in other books I’m reading. They need to stay in Diana Gabaldon’s books where they belong. Reading through the reviews of this books is like an endless list of Outlander fans looking for more to read while waiting for DG to write the next installment. In that case, this book might fit the bill. But it wasn’t my motivation. I was looking for a sweeping historical fiction epic with a romantic bent. But the plot just wasn’t eventful enough. Also, the main Native American characters come directly from Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper. Those two points make the writing seem lazy. If you can’t come up with your own story ideas and characters, don’t publish a book.
