This was everything I’ve ever wanted! My favorite kind of books to read are epic historical love stories, though I can only name on one hand the ones I’ve read and found, but this book was everything I’ve been looking for to add to that list. It had a strong female lead, early America as the backdrop, and a great focus on the Kanyen'kehàka tribe. I loved the romance, the struggles, the triumphs, and the perseverance of the characters. Nathaniel (total husband material. I’m in love) and Elizabeth were a beautiful couple and their story took me on such an adventure! Hawkeye, Hannah, Chigachgook, Curiosity, and more were such a perfect cast of characters. I just loved this a lot and the Outlander cameos!!!! There was clear influence from Last of the Mohicans too, which was so cool! The writing was so detailed and rich, I felt like I was there in the wilderness, in Paradise, in that canoe in the night’s silence. There was drama, romance that made me giddy, heartfelt moments, danger - It was just perfection. I’m just so happy to have found a new series like this!! I highly recommend if you love Outlander, or historical romance in general! Can’t wait to see what’s next for Nathaniel, Elizabeth, and the Bonner family!
Love the historical sided mixed with romance and a feisty heroine.
Satisfying historical fiction with a healthy dose of romance. Reminded me of Outlander, but (don't kill me) I liked it better. :)

A pandemic winter is a perfect time to re-read a long, long complicated novel - many thanks to Jamie for the loan of this book. I enjoyed this second reading more than the first: I read it between "Outlander" novels some years ago, and was disappointed because it WASN'T quite the same, but now I can relish the difference and still enjoy a ripping good piece of historical fiction. Kudos to Donati for imagining the story of the son of Hawkeye and Cora from "The Deerslayer," and for having a sure grasp of American history. Further kudos to her for having created a grand potboiler of a novel, full of breathtaking adventure and a detailed look into the culture of the Kahnyen'kehaka or Mohawk people. Nathaniel and Elisabeth are not Claire and Jamie, but their story is a compelling one. Outlander fans will of course relish with delight the handful of references to Diana Gabaldon's characters (inserted in the tale with her permission). A most excellent read.
If you're a fan of Diana Gabaldon, you'll want to read this series. The authors are friends and Claire is mentioned as the "white witch" in Donati's story. It's a great story, very well written and filled with history.
I started this series because I really missed Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series and this was recommended as a similar type of novel. While the entirety of this series is excellent, this first book was very hard to get into. The beginning starts slowly and does not give you many reasons to care about the characters until almost the end. If you can survive that you're in for a similar journey as the "Outlander" series.
