I adored the concept and development of this novella so so much. It is very sad and dark, which is the given with THAT premise (wow). I love books about characters that are Death or represent Death in any form and this one was definitely added to that collection. Also IT HAS A RED FOX IN IT (sorry, your story has a fox and you win me over). The journey, the growth of the character, the political issues it tackles and how it is handled at the end. It was, without a doubt, a treat of a novella.

I’m not sure what to say about this book. It didn’t really capture me at all but it’s short so I figured I should just finish it. It said what it needed to say it is pages and leaves you feeling as you know all you need to about Sankofa. It’s personally not a story I enjoyed but I didn’t dilute it either. Very eh. It was well written and the narrator for the audiobook does a good job it’s just not personally a story for me.

This is such a well orchestrated story.

We follow Sankofa through trials and tribulations regarding her power and the trauma brought with it. This seems to be a tale of character development and acceptance, but turns into something so much more. We get hints of the underlying conspiracy, but seeing and experiencing this through the narrative of young Sankofa, we don't realize or see the full picture until the very end. The closeness to our current state of world is unnerving, rightfully so.

Moments of high stress, moments of comfort and happy tears, moments of righteous indignation.
