This is such a well orchestrated story.

We follow Sankofa through trials and tribulations regarding her power and the trauma brought with it. This seems to be a tale of character development and acceptance, but turns into something so much more. We get hints of the underlying conspiracy, but seeing and experiencing this through the narrative of young Sankofa, we don't realize or see the full picture until the very end. The closeness to our current state of world is unnerving, rightfully so.

Moments of high stress, moments of comfort and happy tears, moments of righteous indignation.

I always enjoy Okorafor’s writing and world-building, and Remote Control is no exception. While I didn’t find it fast paced like others, I did want to keep reading to find out what happened quickly!

Got off to a bit of a slow start, but Okorafor hits a groove about 25% in and the writing is stunning there on out. Sankofa is a full, brave, heartbreaking character in a life that is unpredictable/unexpected, which is only fitting given who she is. ‘Sankofa’ as a symbol is very well-executed and this book really made me think deeply about home as a physical, emotional, and social place— especially as a young black girl who feels isolated and excluded.
