I thoroughly enjoyed this read, such a fantastic debut.
I listened to the audiobook alongside reading, which really allowed me to imagine the different characters and timelines. I loved the idea of time travel coming to Peckham, I’m also sure that if this was on the curriculum at school, I might have found an interest in Physics!
I cannot wait for ‘The Mirrored world’ and to watch the film adaptation.

~'Dear Holy Avengers,' I pleaded into my interlaced fingers. 'First off, please forgive me for being a prick on Monday. And for lying to Mum about what happened.'~
~No one bothers training their feet for deception because no one else is looking down there.~
~My old English teacher once said that the -cide in the word decide is the same as the one in homicide. 'To chose one future is to murder all the rest,' she warned.~
~In my mind, I was kissing my teeth. It wasn't the fist time I'd been through this, not the first time someone had asked me to rip up my name into smaller, plainer pieces they could swallow.~
~Honestly, who gives a flying fuck about that 2%! All anyone ever wants to talk about is the other 2%. I literally just told you that 98% of people in this world don't get a choice. 98%! Why the fuck are we talking about that lucky 2%?~
~That's what Einstein's equation said: hidden inside even the tiniest bits of matter is an ungodly amount of destructive power ready to be unleashed.~

This one is a big nope from me.
The Upper World is a YA sci-fi about two teens living decades apart who must use physics to figure out how to time travel so they can answer questions about their pasts and save their futures.
This book talks so much about time travel, but there's really no true time travel in it. Very little happens overall. The stakes were way too low, and I was unbelievably bored the whole time. There was also an absurd amount of math and physics in it. When there are tons of equations and diagrams and there are appendices explaining theorems and theorists in YA fiction, I'm thinking we maybe have too much math happening. But that's just me. In all fairness, I never would have picked this up on my own. I read it for a book club. So I'm clearly not the intended audience in the first place. I, personally, wouldn't recommend this one at all.

I wanted to like this more than I did. The language left me confused and the ending didn't quite meet expectations, but I can see how this would be a really great read for a lot of folks. I did really love how big a part actual science played in this scifi book, though—especially that a young black woman was so good at it! (More women and POCs in STEM, please and thank you!)

what in the mind-boggling sci-fi headache did I just read
People who enjoyed the mathy bits of Andy Weir's The Martian will enjoy this YA physics-based time travel thriller. Others like me might be doing a fair bit of skimming those sections but otherwise enjoying the ride.
I can’t pretend to fully understand the science... but this was fascinating and fast paced

Overall, I thought this book was an interesting read, and I liked the way it played with physics concepts and real life scenarios. My biggest complaint is that for a book about time travel, there's arguably not really that big of an actual time travel element in it. I still enjoyed the story.
