I first saw the TV show Lockwood, which was sadly canceled. So I decided to read the books. What I didn't realize was the fact lockwood is a middle grade book, while the tv show is more of a ya/adult. This resulted in the fact that I was expecting something more mature. And don't get me wrong it's not like a boring kid's book. It's just a little less nuanced than the show. I did enjoy it though. And I'm going to try the second book, partly because not everything from the show happened in this book.

*spoilers* "Before that evening? I might have held back...but since stepping through the door...my confidence had slowly risen... this wasn't something I wanted to give up lightly."

Lovable characters with great chemistry and a fun plot / concept. Perfect read while doing a lot of job interviews.

We're rounding up here - teen me would want young adult me to give this four stars.

I only became aware of the books through a friend who told me about the show -- and what a show it was (Dear Netflix, stop cancelling all of the good shows, I'm getting TIRED of it!). So, I can't entirely give credit to the book for making me love the story so much since I watched the show beforehand. Even so, I'm so glad I read this! I rarely dabble with the paranormal, but Jonathan Stroud makes me want to explore the genre (just a little bit... let's not go crazy here).

Shoutout to Lockwood -- what a character. Charismatic, cool, and complex. I fell head over heels for him (teen me would be proud). Side note: The casting for the show was spot on???? Again, I'm pissed they cancelled the show.

Something I discussed with a friend: Stroud has a very unique approach to describing characters. Instead of the typical descriptions of eye and hair colour, Stroud enunciates and exaggerates features that align with the paranormal, dark genre. Height is not merely about how tall a character is or the oh-so-used visual of "towering" or "shrinking" when lined up with other characters. Instead, he hones in on these features, shading them to stand out in ways I've rarely seen before. I really liked that.

Although the story falls a little flat in the third act, the ending makes up for it. Again, if I read this as a teenager, perhaps I would've been entirely absorbed by it. But times have changed and the amount of studying and adulting I have to do plays a role in how little that happens with books catered to the teenager.

That being said, I got the second book and plan to read it soon! I look forward to more Lockwood and Lucy scenes.
