I reviewed this book in my recent newsletter --> subscribe at www.tinyletter.com/ArtofKCF

I loved!!

I really enjoyed most of this book. The chapters were short and easy to read. The last few chapters were really a struggle to get through, they just fell flat and did not hold my interest. I would like to have seen some kind of conclusion or something that tied all his experiences together.

JPB is a great writer and I’d trust him to advise me any day

A fun quick read! I've followed JP on twitter for a while so I was already familiar with his style and humor. This was a really fun mix of stories and actual life advice and just a very pleasant read!

LGBTQ advice columnist JP Brammer is accustomed to mixing his personal life, sense of humor, and heartfelt thoughts into his writing. In this memoir, his ability to laugh at what once made him cry really shines. From growing up as a gay biracial kid in rural Oklahoma to career woes to learning to use his writing to help people, Hola Papi is an earnest and uplifting book about finding your place in the world.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

On being a content writer in the age of social media - “Years upon years of sharing and oversharing —my thoughts, my pictures, my words, words I didn't necessarily agree with anymore, words I had maybe only written to meet a quota or get a paycheck; I felt naked, like I had given too much of myself, a bad self, away. My thoughts and ideas had been landing with people, people who would then go on to construct their own version of me in their minds-to this person, perhaps I was dumb; to that
person, perhaps I was inconsiderate; whatever it was, I had no control. I had given some of the worst people alive thousands of openings to hurt me. I was a sitting duck bobbing at the surface of a shark tank.”

Beautiful stories w underlying satire and seriousness - perfectly balanced read!

As a married white lady that is not on Twitter (or X or whatever we call it these days), I’ll admit that I had no idea who John Paul Brammer was going into this book. I do enjoy a good memoir now and then and I felt like this would be an interesting one based on the title (plus it fits one of the Popsugar 2023 prompts). I also have quite a few friends in the LGBTQIA+ world and I consider myself knowledgeable on some things, so this book in general just caught my interest.

John Paul narrates this himself in the audiobook version and I think it definitely adds a certain intimacy when it’s the author themself reading their personal stories that you just can’t get when reading the text alone. John Paul really highlights the different emotions each of these stories made him feel. This collection is really well-rounded as well with parts that broke my heart but others that made me laugh out loud.

You can tell that John Paul really takes care in writing his stories to be relatable to the reader and to be able to take something away as advice. A few of these chapters really gave me something to think about and sat with me for a while after finishing this book. And he honestly is a very well-spoken writer! I look forward to other works John Paul writes and I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out on any of his future projects.
