was this not a classic line of thinking for a victim of abuse? being too magnanimous in the face of my own misery?
i had a nasty habit of letting people run all over me - […]. i always moved on from these disappointments without complaint. i tended to shrink myself, afraid of the consequences of making too much of a fuss. my experiences with abuse had informed this practice, made everyone out to be a bully in waiting and it behooved me to avoid bringing that out in people, lest i’d become my middle school self again, helpless and pathetic.

Really enjoyed this. It’s a reminder that you can be devoted and care about issues, but it means something totally different when you learn and hear someone’s story.

The first half was stronger than the second, IMO.

I really appreciate the voice and tone in these essays. The mix of humor, self deprecation, earnestness, and compassion makes for good advice to read. Each chapter though is inconsistent. Some are really emotional and powerful. Some are flat. The cohesion is not all there on this one, which is a bummer because I left the book loving John Paul Brammer.
