4.5 stars. An honest and raw read told in essays that mirror his Grindr advice column, Hola Papi, JP Brammer gives life lessons and his own personal experience growing up in Oklahoma as gay and biracial. What’s wild is that we actually went to OU at the same time (overlapped at least a year, maybe two?) and many of the Oklahoma-ish things he mentions I was very familiar with, so personally I found that super fun. JP’s humor is so subtle. It just fit in so naturally that really this was just a solid memoir as opposed to lol humor read, but that made me love it all the more. He is an excellent writer and I can’t believe I hadn’t really known who he was except vaguely through viral Tweets I know I’ve favorited at some points. Definitely slept on this gem of a human, but glad his intriguing book title brought his story to me and I plan to read more of his works as he does us the honor of sharing more of his insights.
