The book that I thought I was going to read versus the book that I actually read…this book surpassed my expectations! Based on the cover and the summary, I thought this book would be a funny memoir about a Mexican gay guy that I had never heard of; it was not. It turned out to be a well-written and authentic-feeling collection of essays that held life-views about real life-issues from a Mexican gay guy that I had never heard of. So good! Would recommend to anyone and everyone looking to understand life just a little bit more; or to anyone who’s open to a different perspective on living and thinking.

Such a kiki! 🌟
This was great— JP Brammer has such a candid, self-aware voice. I especially appreciated the care with which he wrote the chapter on his sexual assault. Content warning for that one in that it’s difficult and potentially triggering to read, but he handled it with such care and compassion for his former and present self.

Brammer, born and raised in Oklahoma but now living in Brooklyn uses his prompts from his "Hola, Papi" column to tell the story of his upbringing as a closeted, biracial, bullied man living in rural Oklahoma. He brought all elements of who he is to this book, which is part of what made it such a compelling read.
A simultaneously humorous and poignant read that addresses bullying and attendant suicidal ideation, sexual assault, learning to dress as a gay man-or what that actually means - and more. I found the undercurrent of the different apps he was using at different times - after originally confining his dating attempts to his laptop.
