The Age Of Innocence has the distinction of being the first novel written by a woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction (in 1921) and I really enjoyed the book.

Newland Archer lives among other upper class New Yorkers in 1870. His life's course is set. He is about to be married to May Welland when a mysterious woman, Countess Ellen Olenska, plagued by scandal enters the scene. Complicating matters are the fact that she is related to his betrothed. Newland soon finds himself in a quandary. Will he choose the safe route or risk his reputation for what his heart really wants? I leave it to you to find out.

The novel looks back at an earlier period and seems to do so in an interesting and descriptive way. I love Edith Wharton's descriptions of the society and it's trappings. I'm glad I read this book.

How can people stand Newland Archer?! Please tell me.

Lovely book, it made me scream inside my head and curse the main character. A masterpiece if you like classics.
