At first glance, this is a family drama, but the dynamics make this feel cinematic. The stakes are vicious, and the dark humor of it all is very reminiscent of Succession. Our narration is snarky and deceptive, and you can't tell whether you want the characters to make up or duke it out. I would almost go as far as to call this a contemporary romance--not because it truly is one, but because the whole thing is so fiery.
While it's a different genre for Ahdieh, her execution is pretty spectacular. I didn't expect to be so taken by this story, and now I can't wait to see what else Adhieh does in the contemporary genre.

3.5⭐️ - I won a copy of the audiobook on StoryGraph.
This is a story about a Korean woman - Jia - who, one day while sitting in her parent’s shop, sees a Birkin handbag and falls in love with it. Due to her longing for this outrageously expensive bag, along with the pressures placed on her by her family, she goes to Columbia law school and gets a job at a top law firm. One of the firm’s partners places her on a new account because of her heritage- the new clients are also Korean.
The Park siblings have come together because their mother, Jenny, is dying of cancer and their father, Seven, is divorcing Jenny to be with his pregnant mistress and hiding the family’s extensive wealth. Jia’s firm is hired to find the money and get Jenny (and thus, the children) their fair share.
The writing and storyline were both well done for the most part. I had issues with a couple of things - such as Darius’ immediate and obvious longing for Jia, the over the top descriptions of food/clothing, the entire scheme of what was going on in the background that Jia was not aware of (a bit too much), and the choices made at the end. A lot of that is the attorney in me though.
And I definitely predicted the twist at the end 🤷🏻♀️
