"It's dreadful, but it's quite short." - Bernard Black

I was excited to read this, with it being considered a classic Ghost Story. However, I was ultimately disappointed - rather than a slow burn, it's more accurate to describe this as a no-burn.

The book feels far longer than its 200 pages, largely because the first 120 are devoted to drawn-out descriptions of nothing very much happening.

It does pick up in the last 80 or so pages, which earned it its extra star - it was firmly in 1 star territory until then.

Satisfyingly creepy ghost story in the Victorian mode - hope it's made into a teleplay or film at some point. I'm going to recommend it to my book club for our October/Halloween read.
