I picked this book up because an Instagram post said it’s a great read for anyone who liked Red, White and Royal Blue- that being said, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this a more than I did rwrb. BUT
OH! how this book won me over 😌😌 I was hooked from the first page itself- the snarky humour is right up my alley.
Alexis Hall really thought about this book and said “Let there be communication” because there was! Communication! Ofc there were certain miscommunications but the fallout didn’t last too long and they actually sorted out their issues and talked to each other.
Yk how in every rom-com there’s this climax scene where one person shows up at the other’s doorstep with a dramatic love confession which ends in a tearful reunion and happily ever after- that scene was done quite uniquely in this book
Luc, my precious cynical fluffball, honestly makes the list to be one of my favourite characters of all time- his mannerisms are Highkey relatable and his character development through the course of this novel is ✨immaculate ✨
Both Luc and Oliver’s friend groups were AMAZING and hilarious to read about. Bridget (luc’s best friend who’s also friends with Oliver and the one who sets them up) is our Captain. Priya=Icon and I accept no arguments. I can never tell the James Royce-Royces apart and well, that adds to the charm okay because those two are the cutest couple. Alexis Hall, pls do write a Priya centric book too, someday. Thanks and regards. Sophie and Ben featured for just a few scenes but won me over after about one line from each of them.
Also, my fellow book nerds, oliver has an excellent taste in books- he’s reading a thousand splendid suns (masterpiece, love it) and (THE MOMENT I LOVED HIM MORE THAN I THOUGHT I COULD) WHEN HE READS THE SONG OF ACHILLES - just seeing these books mentioned 😌😌✨✨✨🤌🤌🤌🤌.
Would highly recommend this Boyfriend Material 📕 I CANNOT WAIT FOR HUSBAND MATERIAL TO COME OUT THIS YEAR JANSJSSB.

This book was recommended to me as similar to Red, White, and Royal Blue, and it did not disappoint! It was delightfully trope-y (fake dating! one bed! showing up on a doorstep in the middle of the night!) and the banter made me genuinely laugh out loud. The only moments I didn't like were when Lucien apologized or felt guilty about saying something that was completely reasonable. I picked up this book to get out of my recent reading slump and absolutely flew trough it, but now I have a book hangover, so...if anyone has similar recommendations, please send them my way!
Happy ending meter (no specific spoilers, just my judgement of how happy the ending is because I always wish someone would tell me that before I read books):

This book isn't only a lighthearted and adorable romance, but also a journey through the character's insecurities and issues. They felt so real, slowly unraveling their past and current emotions. They should clash and not work, but yet they bring out the best in each other. Seeing them grow and learn to accept that was such a wonderful journey.
I did have a problem 100% enjoying this, because sometimes characters would get a bit much. While yes, imperfection certainly is a part of what made the characters in this book so compelling, at times it became a too much, especially in the beginning.
It was all wrapped up beautifully, so I'm not sure whether I would like to read the next books, as I feel like this works really well as a stand-alone. We'll see how I feel next year when the second part comes out and whether I feel like I want to revisit Luc and Oliver.
