Gay’s writing is brilliant as always, and I have mixed feelings about it as an audiobook because on the one hand her narration is excellent, but on the other, the first section of this book in particular is not one to listen to continuously while cooking or commuting, they are essays about serious and tragic events and social issues, so it took me a long time to get through this one because I felt each of those should be listened to with time in between to reflect.

A star has been knocked off for me for a) the celebrity interviews - I’m broadly not interested in them and found them kind of dull as a result and b) I think some of the essays and interviews etc would have benefitted from a post script from today, as they are from so long ago.

The last few essays really swept me away — one of the best short descriptions of love I’ve ever read
