A short play about courting. Tony Lumpkin doesn't want to marry his cousin, Miss Neville, even though his mother highly encourages the act. His sister (step-sister really) is about to meet the husband picked out for her by her father. Neither lady is very excited about the match. Apparently Miss Hardcastle (his sister) has been told that her husband is "bashful," a thing she cannot abide. And for her part, Miss Neville has a suitor that she is much more interested in.
Both of the suitors are heading for the Hardcastle home when Tony plays a trick on them making them believe they are staying at an inn. Chaos ensues.
Fun read.

She Stoops to Conquer is a really funny drama and I truly love it so. The points that really hold me to it are as follows:
1. It is a really short play and thus is perfect for a single-seating read, and readathons.
2. It marked a change in the dramas of that time because sentimental comedies had been preferred back in the day. However, it was Oliver Goldsmith who came up with this laughing comedy and revived the audience.
3. The play also follows the three classical Unities perfectly.
4. The cast is a full-on funny and humourous collection of various people who represent the follies of the age. As such, She Stoops to Conquer is also a comedy of manners.
5. The plot is well created and spans only the duration of a single night, wherein the events take place.
6. The subplot is also a romantic and funny one and is bound to incite laughter in the audience.
I rate She Stoops to Conquer a solid 4/5 stars. I also definitely recommend everyone to read this drama as it’s a funny and short read, and moreover, marked a considerable revolution in the field of play at the time it first came out.

We read several texts about a woman disguising herself this semester (12th night, Fantomina) but this one was probably my favorite. A quick and amusing read. I'd recommend watching a performance of it because the jokes land better when you see them acted out.

Surprisingly funny and readable for something written in the 1700s! It relies on larger than life characters and ridiculous misunderstandings all carried off with zeal and bawdy humor. I want to see it performed!
(I'm currently toiling through Samuel Richardson's [b:Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded|417549|Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded|Samuel Richardson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1387740117s/417549.jpg|2214950], and while that book precedes this play by a good 30 years, I do believe She Stoops to Conqueror might have re-reconciled me to eighteenth century literature. At least until I pick up Pamela again.)

What a play, what a time!
Arguably, it had some funny bits, but overall, I didn't find it that entertaining. Sorry Oliver Goldsmith!

It was fine, but it was very plain. Not a lot happened and it was all tied up neatly at the end which doesn’t appeal to me. But it was a quick read!

this was a breath of fresh air after denser classical novels. very shakespeare-esque, minus the overcrowded plot lines. just old school comedy of the victorian times!
