Main character was a 16-year old girl alone in totally adverse conditions for survival.  Very detailed descriptions of conditions and terrain.  The survival story was decent, but the
trigger warning
ruined it for me

Good survival book with vivid details but a certain book was too farfetcged for my liking.

When I was younger, I loved The Hatchet, and that's what drew me to this book. To be honest, it just didn't stick out to me. It was thought-provoking, but I felt like the storyline was very unrealistic and kind of boring (sorry). AND of course
the dog dies :(
. I don't like leaving mediocre ratings on books that weren't horrible, and I feel like it's just not my genre, so I would recommend this to someone who like wilderness/survival of the fittest/yay hunting type literature.

part of the reason it took me so long to read this book was just because of how obnoxious the main character was. the constant indecisiveness between pitying herself to not feeling bad for herself, to wanting to die, to wanting to live. to PLOTTING OUT HOW TO KILL RAPH TO GIVING UP ON THAT IDEA IMMEDIATELY.

as an attempt at a fun way to keep reading this book interesting, i kept a tally in my own personal book journal of everything sequoia says/does/thinks thats annoying/bratty, and the grand total…..

30 tallies on the dot.

girl.

most of those were from her horrible treatment of Bo, and all of the chances she had to leave, get revenge, and ultimately keep Bo alive. Bo is the ONLY redeemable character. i repeat, Bo supremacy, he is the ONLY REDEEMABLE CHARACTER. and thats saying something because he has approximately 0 lines in the book. his whole purpose is to put up with sequoia being annoying and mopey and half-heartedly wanting to die or smthn.

the structure of this is super confusing as well, i thought she put the notebook in the wreckage half-way through the book, but near the end she states she writes her story on everything she can find since her notebook is full?? also the pills, i could have sworn she had less than 3. idk.

overall, i dont recommend this book. it was a really hard read just purely motivation wise. it wasnt boring per-se but it just wasnt.. enticing enough? she had so many setbacks that could have been easily avoided had she not been so pre-occupied hating her dead dad that it just made reading it more frustrating to get through than anything (although i will say about 3/4ths of the way through, when she is plotting her revenge, the story picks up for a short amount of time and i think that was the most interesting part for me to read.)

0/10 dont recommend, 2/5 because of Bo (rip best boy)
