It's a crime novel; it's a fantasy novel. A murder mystery in a fascinating, but deliberately confusing world, in which conspiracies are uncovered and terrifying mystical truths revealed.
I must say I loved the world, but I personally found the crime novel it's wrapped in to be uncompelling. The climax was more of a shallow plateau, and the ending far less otherworldly than the foreshadowing led me to believe.
Not sure if this was my best introduction into the worlds of Mieville -- but since I understand he changes his genre in every book, I wouldn't mind picking up another.

I don't think I've ever had such a strong, quick desire to immediately stop reading a book. Not into the style at all. Made it a single chapter before I wanted to put it down. Nah, not for me.
