A challenging but very fun read. Quite possibly the best setting I’ve ever seen in a book, extremely unique and very well thought out, it’s easily the highlight of the book. The ending was a little bit weak and the characters were more lenses to view the story through but the story itself was very intriguing. Definitely worth a read.

My brain may have just actually exploded!!! Really!!! That was fantastic!!! Enough with the !!!? This was an interesting genre blend because it was primarily a crime novel with a detective as the narrator but it happened in a very unique city/cities/country/countries/etc. I was edge of my seat, white knuckled through so much of this. I can't actually say much without giving away the coolest part!!! This was weird and fascinating and intriguing and altogether genius. This is my first stab at Mieville and it will definitely not be my last. Okay everybody, go get a copy and get reading!!!

This was my third time reading this and I'm amazed at how much I loved it again. It is such a cool book. It's like a crime novel mixed with sci-fi/fantasy/alt-history or whatever you want to call it elements. I've fallen out on the sci-fi side the prior two times but this time around I can see that it fits magical realism. Or urban fantasy. Really, it can kind of fit in quite a few subgenres.

When a body is discovered Inspector Tyador Borlu is the detective assigned to investigate the crime. Shortly after he arrives he sees a woman across the street, realizes she isn't there, and "unsees" her. Thus begins the dual mysteries of who killed the murdered woman and what exactly is up with this strange world.

I was worried that this wouldn't live up to how much I loved it the first two times. It is a bit slow getting started but once the pace picks up it really moves and then it gathers momentum at a breakneck pace. It's really such a phenomenal novel and is still my favorite Miéville book. I'm glad I have a copy that will resist wear because I will read this many times.
