Very interesting and original story about people being trained not to see what is in plain sight (on threat of death). At the end of the day it's about policing more than it is about anything else and the protagonist, albeit he has 2 female lovers in the background seeming to serve no purpose other than establish his heterosexuality, is very "stereotypical male" charming and confident but not ever really connecting with anyone.
There's an attempt to rescue him from being a complete sociopath near the end but to me that was not successful.
I did want to keep reading because the book made me curious and fascinated but I was also frustrated at how ultimately inhumane it is.

This book is pretty confusing, and I didn't really connect to the characters, but I still liked it. It was interesting at times, although it reminded me a LOT of the excellent show Counterpart. Not sure if I'll read any other Mieville novels, but this wasn't nearly as pretentious as I worried about.

50 pages in a was a little confused by it, and found I didn't care enough to stick with it.
