Y’all I’m mad and happy I put this book off for so long. Mad because IT WAS SO GOOD. Happy, because the sequel drops in November and I don’t have to wait as long 😭. The first chapter pulled me in and confirmed this book as my writing slump cure. If you like the Knight X Princess trope this romance subplot is for you. However don’t be fooled! There’s a lot more happening here which is why I love epic fantasy books. There’s political conflict and development, war strategies and descriptive fight scenes and fighting styles. Oh and it’s Indian inspired which, yes! Love that. This book did have me a tad confused at times but that’s on me you might just have to slow down your reading at times. Which isn’t a bad thing. Overall THIS WAS FUN! That plot twist at the end has me wondering about what this book 2 plot is gonna be because there’s lots of pipping hot tea here(no pun intended 🔥😭)

I found the setting and overarching plot/politics to be quite unique and intriguing, the characters and main plot was a little lacking. I feel like it was a pretty slow paced read and the constant switching between POVs took some getting used to. I feel like having more than two POVs muddled the story a bit. I feel like I wasn’t as connected to the main characters of Elena and Yassen as I should have been, but I do appreciate the motive exploration it allowed for the reader to understand Leo. I found the last quarter of the book was where the story really started to pick up and all of the politics and plot points come together. If the second book continues on this more focused path, I think it would be more enjoyable, at least for me.

DID NOT FINISH: 15%

Was excited about this based on the premise, but couldn’t get into it. I paused it thinking I would come back after listening to a different book, but didn’t feel inclined to do so.
