An incredible account of a moment in history that defied all of the odds.
The way this was retold, the pacing and staging for the events that happened, were done with such care to tell the story right that quite often I forgot that this wasn't a work of fiction.
Because how could these men have survived what they did? And yet.
I described to a friend that reading this book felt, at times, like I was watching a movie. I was so emotionally invested at times and so deep in following the visual descriptions of what was happening that I often lost hours to this book.
Cannot recommend this book enough, and I'm so glad I gave it a shot.

Prior to hearing the audiobook telling of this story, I wasn't familiar with the remarkable journey of Shackleton and his crew in 1914 as they attempted to cross the Antarctic continent before the time of radios and other safety equipment. I learned more about this historical adventure and had chills at the conclusion. I'm amazed at the level of resilience and determination to survive among the group; hard to imagine what thoughts must have been going through their minds aside from those recorded in journal entries.
Notable quote: "Constant vigilance."
Trigger warnings: Animal death/murder; descriptions of health ailments and surgery

This is a very intense account for Shackleton’s voyage. It started rather slow but I found myself riveted soon after. It’s a very human story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Again, there is a lot of animal death and some cruelty involved so only go into this if you can deal with that.
