I went to the library and there was like 4 copies of this and 1 copy of specials and I got so mad I need pretties

There's definitely an M.T. Anderson feel to this book about a futuristic disturbingly looks-fixated society. Maybe it's the bleak futurescape, or how well Westerfield seems to tune in to the teens in his story, only the Westerfield book seems tighter, more suspenseful. Social cliques, the value of physical appearance in society, political apathy, and environmental destruction are among just some of the topics that are touched upon in the first installment. The pacing stutters towards the end and loses some of its momentum, but the reader is left with enough lingering satisfaction to want to keep reading

I somehow did not read this series growing up and I do think my rating would have been far higher had I read it back then. I guess I thought it would have more to say about conventional beauty standards and racism. Not to mention, the love triangle pitting two best friends against each other for a dude. In 2025 I’d like to believe Tally and Shay would have been romantically involved. Now I’m sucked in though and will probably read the rest of the series!
