I enjoyed that this wasn’t the typical French or British or German setting one sees in WWII historical fiction, but I felt the story was lacking in many parts. Stella was the perfect heroine, Mimi was strong until she wasn’t, and I called the twist from, quite literally, chapter three. Robotham has a nice style of writing but I think the plot and characters could certainly be developed more to create a stronger evocation of emotions.

I truly enjoyed this book. The only part where this book fell flat for me was with the modern day perspective. I know that dual timelines are hugely popular with historical fiction but in this case, this book would have been so much better without it. It did not add anything to the story.

Overall it was a great book! Very slow in the beginning and definitely wasn’t on the edge of my seat at all but it did keep me guessing a little towards the end. Once I got about halfway through it kept me focussed and I was able to finish it quickly. I always love these books about women in the Resistance so I did enjoy it, however I found it a little boring the way it was written.
