Menudo viaje.

Really beautiful notes that talk a lot about the Canto's in detail after each canto and does a great job helping with the Italian translation. The only negative about this translation is it doesn't ready as beautifully as say the CIARDI version. That's it.

I don't imagine I have anything new to say about The Divine Comedy, as it's been written about for 700 years.

The Inferno is exciting, incisive and filled with intense imagery. Even though we might not always have the context for why a particular pope is having his feet burned, we recognize it as just punishment of hypocrisy and for abuse of power.

This was my second time trying to read Purgatorio, and it resonated much more this time (though this is a much better translation). I think it also helps that I'm almost a decade older now, and have spent time trying to learn from mistakes and make up for them. The journey towards redemption is potent.

Paradiso was a struggle. No longer being a Christian means that the mysteries Dante is trying to explain don't hold the same value they might have at one point. Also, after nearly a thousand pages, I wanted to grab Dante by the shoulders and yell "We get it, your Popes were shitty!" But the moments of divine revelation, where Dante is struggling to comprehend Heaven were interesting. The last Canto, as he finally looks upon God was surprisingly moving to me.

Dnf.

It took me quite a long time to finish this book but i was determined to.I thought it was amazing and confusing all at the same time and I'm assuming you probably have to read it many times before you can fully grasp it all. I will say i loved the beginning of the book more then the ending. The people in Dante met in the inferno where more interesting to me I guess.
