This book took me 9 months to read with 2 bookmarks, 1 for the text and 1 for the notes! It was enormously rewarding and a massive insight into the thinking and preoccupations of the 1300s. There are strands and influences of The Divine Comedy everywhere in western art and literature and wish I had read it years ago!

So elaborate. While I do appreciate Dores illustrations and the world building Dante creates the flowery prose that Longfellow translate the verses too were hard to comprehend in the beginning till the end I had to look up many historical and scholastic references and yet I still see how important this work is digesting christian doctrine and how ot shapes both Divine grace and justice in terms of not just personal devotion but that of grace given by others

i thoroughly enjoyed this journey; the prose and writing style was absolutely stunning and sketched out “hell” in such vivid yet horrid imagery that i can see why this image has persisted for so long. the allegorical meanings throughout were well-explained by translator notes which greatly helped in understanding some of the more nuanced or subtle complexities. i have yet to read the other parts so i cannot compare but this poem was brilliant.
