I managed to get through Inferno, but skimmed through Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Dante has filled all three of these spheres with politicians, literary and public figures, and kinsmen that were likely common in his day but have no significant meaning for me. As such, I feel I've lost some of the intended meaning of the lessons. A great epic poem nonetheless.

I know how much hate I can get with this review, but here we go:
Don't get me wrong, I get why this is a world classic and overall considered one of the best books ever, BUT I just didn't like it that much. Before you throw me into a pit know that we all have a different taste and comprehend everything differently.
I truly don't know what's gone into me. I usually like this stuff. Maybe it was just the translation (into Czech) that bugged me, because it was written like in the middle of the last century so the language is really old and weird and I couldn't understand half of the things they were saying. Maybe, just maybe if someone rewrote the whole thing into a more understandable and up to date language it would become a hit. Or maybe not. After all we are talking about the book where there's just this main character who's literally travelling through hell and heaven to get to his PLATONIC love, whom he barely knows. I know that back then it was considered as the purest kind of love, but still… I wouldn't even get coffee for someone like that. Anyway, so he travels and describes everything to the slightest detail (even more lengthy than that one in Eragon) while talking to dead people - whom you usually know nothing about - about other dead people - whom you usually know nothing about. And even if by any chance you knew all those people you wouldn't recognise them anyway, because they aren't mentioned by their name only by the things they've done (which btw adds like 200 more pages of uselessness).

Nonetheless, I must admit that Dante's portrayal of afterlife is remarkable and imaginative and an inspiration to many great writers and that is something to be appreciated.

So elaborate. While I do appreciate Dores illustrations and the world building Dante creates the flowery prose that Longfellow translate the verses too were hard to comprehend in the beginning till the end I had to look up many historical and scholastic references and yet I still see how important this work is digesting christian doctrine and how ot shapes both Divine grace and justice in terms of not just personal devotion but that of grace given by others
