The Divine Comedy is a masterpiece, an achievement in writing that has in many ways yet to be matched.
I could go on about how much this work has inspired me but I will keep this brief. When I read this for the first time in high school I was in awe of the detail and scope of this book. Years later I still find new ways to interpret and analyze this book, there are so many details that can escape you even on the tenth read. Now, I'll admit this is not a book for a casual read, it takes some work but it is well worth it.
Take a look at the original Italian to appreciate the rhyme scheme of this work, and I highly recommend any edition that includes the amazing illustrations of Gustave Dore.

Leute, heute darf ich euch eine unglaubliche Rezension präsentieren. Ich hab's vielleicht das ein oder andere Mal durchklingen lassen, dass ich "Die göttliche Komödie" als mein Sommerprojekt ansehe, aber viele wird das wahrscheinlich trotzdem überraschen. Insgesamt habe ich drei Monate für dieses Werk gebraucht. Mitte August habe ich begonnen und Ende Oktober habe ich es abgeschlossen. Zwischendurch musste ich wegen des Umzugs mal ein bisschen pausieren und dann auch noch mal ein paar Tage nach der Absolventenfeier. Aber sonst habe ich fast ausnahmslos jeden Tag zumindest einen Gesang gelesen. Manchmal auch noch einen zweiten und manchmal noch einen dritten, je nachdem, wie motiviert ich gerade war.
In diesem Jahr wird ein Dante-Jubiläum gefeiert. 2021 war Dantes 700. Todestag. Das hat mich ursprünglich dazu gebracht, die "Göttliche Komödie" zu kaufen. Und ich hatte dann die Wahl zwischen einer schönen, ausführlich kommentierten, zweisprachigen Ausgabe und einer billigeren ohne Kommentar. Ein Tipp für alle, die bisher erst wenig mit Klassikern zu tun hatten: Wenn ihr die Wahl habt, dann holt euch immer eine kommentierte Version. Das kann den Unterschied machen, zwischen einem Buchabbruch aus Frustration und einer schwierigen, aber spannenden Leseerfahrung. In dieser Dante-Übersetzung ist der Kommentar nochmal ausführlicher, als ich es von anderen Klassikern gewohnt bin. Aber der Kommentar ist hier allein schon wegen des Alters des Werks sehr notwendig. Er war unglaublich hilfreich. Ich hab nicht jeden einzelnen Kommentar gelesen, aber gerade bei Personennamen war das eine gute Ergänzung für mich.
Spannend ist für mich auch, dass meine Uni dieses Semester eine Ringvorlesung zu Dantes "Göttliche Komödie" anbietet. Das hat mich dazu motiviert, dranzubleiben. Immerhin will ich doch auch wissen, worüber da gesprochen wird und mir eine eigene Meinung zum Text bilden können. Ich bekomme jetzt wöchentlich neuen Input zum Thema und das ist echt spannend. Aber dadurch, dass ich dieses Werk gelesen hat, kann ich jetzt auch mal für mich beschließen: "Nein, diese Theorie ist für mich nicht schlüssig, da spricht für dieser und jener Abschnitt dagegen." War zwar bis jetzt erst einmal in dieser Vorlesung der Fall, aber trotzdem ein cooles Gefühl.
Auch wenn ich begeistert von Dante bin, kann ich euch die Lektüre dieses Werks nur dann empfehlen, wenn ihr schon Erfahrung mit Klassikern gesammelt habt. Die Sprache hier ist nicht einfach und um den Inhalt halbwegs verstehen zu können, braucht ihr Hintergrundwissen. Ich meine es Ernst: Dieser Text ist nicht einfach. Auch für mich nicht, und ich habe einen Bachelor in Literaturwissenschaft und deswegen so einige Werkzeuge für das Verständnis von Literatur parat, als das bei den normalen Leser:innen der Fall sein dürfte.
Am unterhaltsamsten finde ich den ersten Teil: "Die Hölle". Hier gibt es so viele Seitenhiebe gegen Machthaber und religiöse Figuren, Bischöfe, Päpste und co. und das zu lesen hat mir wirklich Spaß gemacht. Ich habe meinem armen Vater sogar Ausschnitte vorgelesen, die ich witzig fand. Manche fand er sogar ebenfalls lustig. Am wenigsten spannend fand ich paradoxerweise das "Paradies". Da ging für mich viel Spannung dadurch verloren, dass der Erzähler so verrückt nach seiner verstorbenen Freundin Beatrice ist, der er hier wieder begegnet.
Mein Fazit? Ihr habt keine Ahnung, wie stolz es mich macht, dass ich es geschafft habe, Dantes "Göttliche Komödie" von vorn bis hinten durchzulesen. Und ich möchte eine (zumindest teilweise) Wiederholung nicht ausschließen.

Inferno and Purgatorio are way more interesting than Paradisio. While they aren't that interesting to begin with, since the majority is to describe how sins affect sinners, as well as putting his own personal enemies in hell, it has a lot more character and interesting descriptions of what hell and purgatory could look like to believers.
Paradisio is just a fanfic of how amazing god is, and for a non-believer, this is pretty boring as everything is too perfect to describe, and thus we have nothing to really take away from it.
Also, his relationship with Beatrice is on the creepy side, not a big fan of it, and he simps as much on her than he does on Virgil.
If you want to read something chanting the glories of God, you'll probably enjoy it way more than I did. If I ever read it again, I'll limit myself to Inferno.

Read Inferno only. Long form classical poetry is decidedly not my jam, so will not be reading the other two works in this compendium.

I first read Dante way back in high school and thought it was a fun adventure. Now with a LOT more life behind me lets look at this again. The big thing to look at today is Dante's treatment of simony. Those who betray God by selling his favors and his grace belong in Hell, many are there head down in a baptistery in the eighth circle third bolgia or ditch. Some of the august residents here are Nicholas III, Clement V, Boniface VIII to them I would add Felicia,former pastor of ST. Paul's U.M.C and any of the pastors here in Abilene TX. Even those at Heavenly Rest are iffy. Also Joel Olstein, the Bakker's, and the rest of the Rt wing preachers who preach prosperity theology. All are guilty of simony which is part and parcel of prosperity theology. All of our modern theologians need to reread both their Bibles, as they haven't actually read it, and the Divine Comedy as they are also those dammed by St. Bartholomew, St Augustine and St. Bernard. Just as in 1300 as today pastor's and priest's who lead the flock to try to buy their way to heaven WILL end up in Hell and those that try will be disappointed or worse. I, and I know a lot of this is getting away from Dante and closer to modern home , believe that, at least here in Abilene Tx, I am safer taking communion in the worst version of the Black Mass as imagined by late 19th Century French authors than I am of taking communion in ANY Church in any state that has a South Eastern Conference football team and especially in ANY CHURCH in Abilene Tx.
