I really enjoyed this book and think it was such a wild ride. I feel it climaxes very well at the end, there is such a fervor and an ecstasy with which Dante writes the final few cantos which translates even now as I type this review on my iPhone into an app called Goodreads. His ideas and concepts of heaven, hell, and purgatory are so fantastical, inspired by the time, and well done.
The hardest parts for me were his commentaries on policial climate and events taking place in Italy and Europe at that time, I’m not too familiar with 13-14th century Italian history so a lot of it flew over my head, thank goodness for notes and commentary.

book #35 of 2020: The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri (pub. 1320). well, I‰ЫЄm pretty I never would‰ЫЄve gotten through it if it weren‰ЫЄt audio. it‰ЫЄs certainly a masterpiece and I‰ЫЄm really glad I finally got to it, but it‰ЫЄs also an endless slog that I more endured than enjoyed. of the classical literature I‰ЫЄve checked out this year: this, Paradise Lost, Faust, and Herodotus‰ЫЄ Histories, I can definitely recommend the last two and I may someday register to Herodotus, but there‰ЫЄs a lot of other stuff to check out before that happens. 3/5. and now for something completely different....
This was a great, challenging book but one that is worth the challenge. This is a book that (being the tomb that it is) is meant to be read in chunks, instead of devoured in just one or two settings. The poem is beautiful with its structural complexity and vivid imagery. It moves you from concrete areas to areas that become more abstract as you travel along with Dante through each level of hell. I believe the best part about the entire thing is the further into the poem you go, the more complex it becomes and the more you have to sit and think on what you have read before you can go on. I love a book that immerses you so fully within the story-line.
Inferno has the most descriptive and flowing writing. Purgatorio dropped it a little but overall was still a good read. Paradisio was basically just talking up how wonderful Beatrice is and God is awesome and if you love God then all is beauty. Without Paradisio would be a 4.5 book.
Inferno: Gosh, this is probably the heaviest thing I have ever read! Definitely not used to the language, so it was really hard for me to get through. But I did it! At least it's a poem and has a lot of detailed illustrations, breaking it up to motivate me through it, haha.
Purgatorio: I liked this better than Inferno, and I felt it was easier to get through. A beautiful story with lots of symbolism.
Paradiso: At first I found this as difficult to get through as Inferno, but towards the end it grew on me. I guess Beatrice enchanted me, hahah. Beautiful illustrations. I'm glad I finally got through the entire comedy! It was quite the challenge, and I'm glad I did it, even though it wasn't really my thing.

The first time I read this book, I found it interesting but didn’t love it. This second time reading it, I found it to be a beautiful, almost ecstatic experience. Who knows what splendors await a third read?
