While Lily's shy & sapphic coming-of-age story is so emotionally & thoroughly told on its own, the passages about her aunt's and parents' lives alongside important events of the time were meaningful additions. Not only did these other details put Lily's challenges into a historical context, they shift the adults from being seen as automatic antagonists into well-rounded but still imperfect people.

The author's writing style is so bland and the ending was

very anti-climactic. I don't mind the fact that it was not a happy ending. The issue is that it's so meaningless and disjointed from the rest of the story.

That being said, I don't enjoy reading romance in general (I just read this for a book club) so my opinion might be biased and to be fair there were a few paragraphs that were relatable and well-written.

While I love a good queer historical fiction novel, this plot dragged consistently for me. It had both too much and too little dialogue at the same time (if that's possible) and I didn't find the main characters all that loveable. The premise was very interesting but I felt like the execution was definitely lacking.

Despite this book taking place in the 1950s, it reflects some of the modern-day feelings of being queer in an unacceptable environment. It handles the interactions of race, sexuality, and income in the time of the Red Scare and how all of these identities affect each character's life. Great read overall!
