adventurous hopeful sad tense

I loved this. It is a bittersweet YA romance about a young lesbian from San Fran's Chinatown facing multiple prejudices as she moulds her identity as a lesbian and as a wishful rocket scientist. Often, romance can be very cringey and trite. This novel was neither of those things in my opinion. It being set in the 1950s meant that the stakes were automatically high for two gay girls. All of the conflicts--the homophobia, the racism, the family tension, the friendship tension, the McCarthyism--felt real because they were/are real parts of history, so there was nothing trite about it. I wish more romance novelists would dig this deep about present-day sociopolitical issues, which are as relevant to lgbtq+ people now as they were in the 1950s. As much as I am comforted by the happy-go-lucky side of the romance genre, sometimes it feels a bit tone deaf. Whenever I encounter any good lgbtq+ media, I think "we need a hundred more of these."

I almost cried  during the scene at the end. Such a heartwarming and emotional experience of self discovery. Fuck everyone who was homophobic though, they can choke
