I've been aware of this since it came out but never picked it up because I tend to avoid sad books. However I heard several reviews which made me think I might like this one. It is very sad but it explores the chaos of grief in a really interesting way. Cave's writing is raw and vulnerable and Ruth is a very messy character. I just wanted someone to look after her. It was hard to read at times but I'm glad I finally picked it up.

Amazing. As a little sister who is prone to being a mess, this really connected with me. Heartbreaking, hilarious, beautiful.

I was hooked from the first page, trying to unravel the mystery of the sisters’ relationship and what happened to Hannah. I cried a lot and felt every single one of Ruth’s ups and (very low) downs. I texted my own sister while reading this that I was feeling very emotional because of the story, and I wanted a hug from her!

The only reason I didn’t give this five stars is that the open ending has been playing on my mind.
Did Ruth kill herself? Or was jumping (and not dying) her way of dealing with or accepting that she wasn’t truly responsible for Hannah’s death?
I’ve been thinking about it for days!

I just loved it, what a beautiful and terrible story all at once. A really great narration on how grief really feels.

This felt so strangely personal and intimate. I read it basically in two sittings (only stopping on the first one because it was 3am and I was crying). Cave's portrayal of people is so realistic it made me instantly feel like I knew who everyone in the book was already. The way she writes dialogue and texting as more like a script made conversations flow and very much reminded me of her one-woman shows.
Highly recommend, her portrayal of grief feels realistic and heartbreaking, and although I know I cry at a lot of books, I think if you've got siblings be warned and don't read it in public.
