Abigail LOVES to count, but what to count?

Rayner offers an adorable story about friendship and counting in an African setting. The illustrations are beautiful silkscreen prints. Abigail begins counting moving objects, which isn't easy and she soon becomes frustrated. Her friends help her out by finding something to count and volunteer to help...except they can't count. I love their counting. It's fun and true to life for the youngsters learning their numbers. Abigail patiently teaches them to count. It's a great counting book and offers a fun twist of silly counting.

Reviewed from a library copy.

Beautiful illustrations accompany an adorable counting story. I appreciated that Abigail was frustrated without being over the top or the focus of the story. I also chortled at the counting her animal friends do - so like a child learning to count!

~ Catherine Rayner is the study of an author project I am doing so excuse the sudden influx of her books ~

My absolute favourite so far of this author.
I love the relationship between the group of friends and the titular character. I enjoy the importance of numbers and counting. I love the opportunity for children's interaction with the counting itself during reading and the simple sensory interaction of the extendable page at the end as a final flourish to re-engage children and add to that sense of wonder Abigail has.

I also think it of of note that the main character of a maths based book is female, which really makes me happy.

A lovely book to introduce counting up to 10. Children can help Abigail teacher her friends to count and notice their mistakes. A fun way of counting with a nice story and lovely illustrations.

Beautiful art, the animals are so realistic in the shapes and contours of their bodies. A fun counting book for kids we are still trying to the numbers in correct order. Very sweet friendship book as well.

This book is fabulous and I need to get copies for all of my EYFS team ASAP. Abigail is struggling to count and she discovers why. There are lots of strategies that we employ when counting and it helps to start with if the things we are counting with stay still! This is a heartwarming tale and my eyes welled up at the end because the friendship element of it is so beautiful.
