I was not a huge fan of the first Kate Daniels book. I found it uneven, slow and a little boring. It put me off from picking up the next book for a long time. But I’m happy that I picked up the next book in this series because it’s a lot better than the first.
I like how Ilona Andrews writes urban fantasy but she can make all the characters, love interests and world building are very different book to book. The relationships that develop between the main characters feel very different. I personally find this impressive because usually books by different authors all feel very similar.

Omg SWOON.
Now that the world building was done in book 1 the plot and characters really came out to play and I loved just about every character!

Wow this series is pretty entertaining. Finished in one sitting. Not what you expect at all. The main focus the past few books has been on Kate's character development and the relationships she creates with people around her. I loveee that. Her relationship with lil Julie is honestly so heartwarming.

I think most other people were right when they say that this book really helps you understand what's going on in this universe. There were parts of the first book that really confused me with the magic, the tech and all the other things that weren't fully explained. This book, I got a better idea of what was going on and I actually really enjoyed it. What I like about them is their unique perspective on things like vampires and shifters. But god damn it, I want some information about Kate! I feel so in the dark about her. Grrrrr. On to the next book.

Good character and world writing. Bad mystery. If my protagonists are solving cases, I like my plots to be follow-along-able/theoretically-solvable rather than minor-internal-mythology-newly-revealed.
