I liked David Bowie's narration. And the story itself is fun enough. But I'm just not a classical music person. Ah, well.

This retelling is a bit flat and the pictures don't capture the drama and tension of the events. Still, it could be helpful with the "Peter and the Wolf" music playing in the background.

Miss Ellen came in humming this today and I had to find it and listen to it. I remember night after night falling asleep to our cassette of Peter and the Wolf! Such great music!

I love Jim Dale and I absolutely loved this one!!!
This is a magical, musical adaptation of the story of "Peter and the Wolf". I have seen this performed by a symphony at my hometown when I was very young and my mom was trying to get me to love classical music. It had illustrations on the back and it was narrated too. She succeeded: I was enchanted by how well every instrument matched every animal.
Jim Dale's narration was exceptional, as he can voice characters in a very unique way.

Outside it's snowing right now, I made a cup of coffee and listened to this. It worked out perfectly!
A highly recommended audio experience!

Peter and the Wolf
Brief summary Classic retelling of the symphonic children’s classic
Annotation - This is a book that must be pre-read and practiced before reading aloud. The unusual sounds the animals make to imitate the instruments in the symphony take some time to work through so it sounds natural.
Age appropriateness 3-5 years
Connection to six early literacy skills
Phonological awareness - This book uses a lot of different sounds to imitate animals that may not be what children have heard before, and that is a good thing.
Opinion - The pictures are intricate and well done, the story as retold is good, but I don’t think children will end up enchanted with this classic tale from this book.

I'd somehow never heard this before. Music from it tends to get quoted often, but I never knew the origin. I enjoyed how each character has its own instrument which helps the listener to better imagine the story through the music. The story is simple, but my 6-year-old listened to it on repeat for several days after we listened to it together.

I've often imagined my own stories to go along with classical music pieces. It's just a shame there aren't more musical pieces with story accompaniments for children.
